Tips on Writing Lyrics - How to Develop a Great Song Idea

When songwriters are searching for tips on writing lyrics, they often are stuck or are having a hard time developing all the sections for their song from their original idea. Coming up with a great song idea is the hardest part, so if you have done that, the rest should be downhill!

Sometimes I like to think of song lyrics as a puzzle. Lyrics have to be organized, original, and relevant. Brainstorming is key when it comes to songwriting, and it all starts at the original idea.

After you have come up with an idea for a song, the lyric can be developed around it. First, try stating the main theme of your song in many different and interesting ways. Try to sum it up in one phrase or one line. This phrase should be interesting, and it should provoke curiosity in your listener. This phrase will become your title line, or hook, of your song.

Once you have made your decision on your hook, ask the questions that the hook provokes. The basic "who, what, when, where, and why" come to mind, and they typically work. After writing down all these questions, explain each answer in detail. These answers make great material for the verse section of your song.

Example: "Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson.

The main idea is that a girl from a small town wants to escape her boring life. The word "breakaway" sums this up in a powerful way. After hearing the title of the song, you can make a pretty good guess as to what the song is about, but you still wonder, "Breakaway from what?" "Who is breaking away?"

These songs are answered in the verse lyric with great imagery and detail. It personalizes the character of the song to make the listener care.

Try this method when it comes to your next project, and see if these tips on writing lyrics help you.
